Students who have completed at least half the dissertation by the spring quarter of their sixth year may apply for Divisional Dissertation Completion Fellowships or the Committee’s Nef Dissertation Fellowships for their seventh year, after which they will not be eligible for further funding.
The decision on the thesis will then be reached in a closed meeting of the faculty present. The defense is to be scheduled at least two weeks before the University deadline indicated in point (a). A final draft of the dissertation must be made available to the entire faculty 8 days before the dissertation presentation.

Graduation. The Office of the University Registrar certifies the graduation of all candidates for all degrees. The process includes coordinating the student applications to graduate, validating the completion of all academic and financial requirements, preparing the diplomas, and then distributing the diplomas on the day of Convocation and at other quarterly ceremonies.
The John U. Nef Committee on Social Thought is an interdisciplinary, Ph.D. granting graduate program. Its guiding principle is that the serious study of many academic topics, and of many philosophical, historical, theological and literary works, is best prepared for by a wide and deep acquaintance with the fundamental issues presupposed in all.
The dissertation must be supervised by at least two members of the faculty and must be completed within five years of the candidate's first registration in the J.S.D. Program. A candidate must spend at least two years (six academic quarters) in residence at the Law School while working on the dissertation.
