How is writing a dissertation in the social sciences different from writing a dissertation in humanities or STEM? Please join Vai Ramanathan and Shelley Dykstra for a Q and A about doctoral dissertation writing in the social sciences. This student-led virtual discussion will address concerns generated by social science graduate students in a questionnaire sent out a week.
Dissertation Requirements. The student’s Dissertation Committee shall be selected in accordance with the regulations of the Ph.D. program, but must include at least one member of the DE. The DE member may be the Dissertation Committee Chair.. Make a Gift to the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.
Qualifying Examination. All four of the required courses for the DE have to be completed before your Qualifying Examination. Students in the program are also expected to incorporate critical theory as a central category of analysis in their qualifying examination lists and dissertation topics; and one member of the qualifying examination committee must be an affiliate of Critical Theory.

A student should plan on at least 5 years to satisfy all requirements of the degree. Normative time to advancement to candidacy is 7 quarters. Normative time to complete the Ph.D., measured from the time a student begins graduate study in the pharmacology and toxicology graduate group is 5.5 to 6 years.
Dissertation Committee Doctoral students in the Graduate Group in Epidemiology follow the Dissertation Plan B option at UC Davis. UC Davis specifies a minimum three-member dissertation committee, an optional final oral examination (made on an individual student basis by the dissertation committee), and an optional required exit seminar.
Transferred courses are evaluated through an internal process by the instructor of the course at UC Davis. If approved, the course is waived for the student. The waived course does not formally appear on the UC Davis transcript as a transferred course, but does appear on the internal Program of Study form as satisfying the course requirements for the degree.
Doctoral Degree Apply Now! Candidates in the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in ECE are expected to make an original and significant contribution to knowledge in a specialized area. The ECE Ph.D. program consists of passing a preliminary Ph.D. evaluation—an individualized program of study—performing satisfactorily on a qualifying examination and completing a research dissertation.
