Set defense date with your committee. Be aware of the dissertation submission deadlines for each quarter, as your defense must be done before the Dissertation’s Office deadline, and must allow for time for any needed revisions to the dissertation prior to the submission date. Application for the degree: you must submit an application for the degree by the end of the first week of the quarter.
Deadline to submit the application to graduate via my.uchicago.edu portal. Note: It is recommended that students defend their dissertation and complete all required revisions before applying to graduate. Wednesday of week 4. Deadline for optional dissertation draft review through UChicago Dissertation Office. Friday of week 4.
Pedagogical training is a vital part of the education doctoral students receive at UChicago. Students will typically serve as course assistants for three faculty-taught courses with the opportunity subsequently to teach two courses on their own as the primary instructor in their fifth and sixth years, with the course in their sixth year being one of their own design.

Once that approval form has been submitted the Dissertation Office checks that the dissertation meets University-wide requirements. If there are deficiencies, the office notifies the candidate and the Law School, detailing what must be corrected for the student to be eligible to receive the J.S.D. degree.
